“It’s just not the right time for me right now.”
“When the kids get older, it will be easier for me to be healthy.”
“Work is just insane at the moment – I’ll be able to make more time for myself in the future.”
“I’m too tired from all my other obligations.”
“Eating healthy is too much work right now, once _____ happens, then I can clean up my diet.”
I hear these things all the time. And they all feel valid – no doubt about that. And no one is saying that making changes to your healthy lifestyle is easy and smooth sailing. What I am asking is for you to ask yourself, “Am I committed to myself?”
I’m not asking for you to put yourself first, I’m asking if you’re even on your list of commitments at all.
If we constantly ‘put off’ a healthy lifestyle until the ‘right time’ then I guarantee, the time will come when it is absolutely not the right time to be sick. And ready or not, you will have to face it.
That’s not meant to be threatening or ominous, it’s the truth. Momentum is an amazing thing – if your habits are moving you toward health, momentum works to your advantage. If your daily habits are pushing in the other direction, well then it’s time to start turning the ship around.
We all crave this feeling of “the right time.” Where the stars align and there’s a big neon sign that says “the time is now!” Unfortunately with health and fitness, this typically comes in a much scarier form of a reality check – like a heart attack, an uncomfortable conversation with a doctor, or an illness. I’m telling you, you don’t have to wait for this to start pushing toward a healthier lifestyle. You are able to commit to yourself – just like you’ve committed to your job, your kids, your spouse, etc.
Add yourself to your list of commitments, right now.
The kids will survive the 60 minutes that you take to get a workout in. In fact, you’re modeling the behavior I am sure you want them to emulate. Work will always be crazy – your job will survive for the time you step away to get a workout in. And you won’t be ostracized from the office network if you choose to pack your lunch with healthy choices instead of joining the group to eat out or for happy hour.
Stop waiting for ‘the right time.’ When you have a coach to guide you, we act as mentors pointing you in the right direction to make meaningful, achievable changes that fit into your life. You don’t have to wonder if you’re doing the right thing, you have an expert guiding you toward success.
You can do this, and you are worth it. And the time is now.
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” – Chinese Proverb
